SM Prime Holdings, Inc. continues to lead sustainable property development by delivering low-carbon office spaces and climate-smart retail environments through energy-efficiency programs, on-site renewable energy, and long-term strategic partnerships.

Since the 1990s, SM Prime has rolled out initiatives such as lighting upgrades, improved air-conditioning and ventilation systems (ACVS), and optimized building management systems, cutting emissions while delivering both environmental and cost benefits. In 2024, SM Supermalls cut electricity use by 38 percent, avoiding 156,736 metric tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and saving ₱2.3 billion.

At the recently concluded 5th Energy Efficiency Excellence Awards of the Department of Energy (DOE), SM Prime business units—SM Supermalls, SM Offices, and SM Hotels—received multiple Certificates of Excellence.

The recognition reflects strong collaboration among engineering teams, service providers, tenants, and customers, driven by leadership and the company’s commitment to the SM Green Movement.

Renewable energy milestones

Aligned with its Net Zero by 2040 goal, SM Prime is advancing practical and scalable decarbonization. At SM City North Edsa, the company marked a clean-energy milestone with 59 properties now generating a combined 100 megawatts (MW) of on-site renewable energy—among the largest solar capacities in the Philippine property sector.

More than 50 percent of SM Supermalls’ energy use now comes from renewable sources, supported by partnerships with Aboitiz Renewables, TotalEnergies, Citicore Renewable Energy Corporation, and other leading solar providers. These collaborations strengthen communities while supporting a more sustainable future.

In partnership with WWF-Philippines, SM Prime has also committed to the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and is working toward its near- and long-term targets.

Retail architecture working with nature

SM Prime’s energy strategy centers on creating sustainable and resilient spaces that enhance community experiences. Its malls integrate passive design features such as high ceilings, wide atriums, skylights, open layouts, and natural ventilation, reducing daytime energy use while creating brighter and more comfortable spaces.

Smart solutions—including motion-sensor escalators, solar-powered outdoor areas, and energy-efficient cooling systems—position SM Supermalls as a preferred destination for tenants and shoppers.

Shared climate benefits for all

“Customer expectations are evolving fast. When our leaders first launched these initiatives, awareness of consumption’s environmental impact was still emerging. Today, brands—from global labels to MSMEs—are looking for partners that invest in circularity and ESG outcomes,” said SM Supermalls president Steven Tan.

As SM Prime scales up its energy programs, the SM Green Movement continues to build resilient energy infrastructure that ensures safe, comfortable, and welcoming spaces for communities.

“We are committed to making our malls as energy-efficient as possible through advanced technologies and best practices. SM Supermalls will continue expanding its sustainability efforts to reduce environmental impact and improve quality of life for both the planet and the communities we serve,” Tan said.
