Energy Secretary Sharon Garin cited the importance of elevating coordination with the private sector to achieve the government’s clean energy shift.
This, after she joined President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. during the ceremonial switch-on of the 125 megawatts (MW) Lumbangan solar power project and the 72-MW Luntal solar power project of Citicore Renewable Energy Corporation (CRED) in the municipality of Tuy in Batangas.
The Department of Energy (DOE) said the said power projects are the first hybrid agro-solar and battery energy storage facilities.
“By putting in place utility-scale solar facilities with battery storage and agrivoltaics, these projects set a national benchmark for how private innovation and public policy can work together to speed up our energy transition and deliver real benefits to communities,” Garin said as quoted in a news release.
The two projects are expected to produce up to 197 megawatts of clean energy with the use of a 320-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system, which will work beyond the solar generation window of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Citicore earlier said it plans to add five gigawatts of renewable energy (RE) within five years.
Garin said these power projects will help the government hit its target to increase RE sources to 35 percent of the total mix by 2030.
“Every megawatt we add from renewables, backed by storage and smart grid investments, means a more resilient, more affordable power system for Filipino families and businesses,” she added.
“We look forward to seeing Citicore and other partners bring more projects online, faster.”
